Our ESC volunteer Laiali in Baia Mare - Romania
Following my arrival in the city of Baia Mare, Romania, as a volunteer with the “Green Tin” project under the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) programme, and sent by the YNDI organization in Jordan (for 10 months), I would like to share my impressions of my initial experience here.
I was captivated from the very first moment by the city’s tranquility and the captivating beauty of its nature. Lush green spaces and dense trees fill the atmosphere, giving it a unique feeling of peace. My enthusiasm to make a useful contribution and discover a new culture was matched by the exceptional kindness and big-heartedness of the local people. Despite the language challenge (as most don’t speak English fluently), their smiles and willingness to help transcended any barrier. I relied on learning basic Romanian phrases and employ gestures or simple translation daily, which has created endearing and sometimes funny situations.
One of the most significant gains this month has been meeting volunteers from diverse nationalities around the world. Our international friendships have become a precious gift enriching my experience. Now, after just one month, I feel I am on the right path, and I am overflowing with gratitude for this opportunity. I look forward through it to continuing my journey in the heart of Romania, filled with learning, giving, and new discoveries.
